Pistol permit privacy forms available from clerk's office

SPRINGVILLE — The following guest column was submitted by Erie County Clerk Chris Jacobs.

Erie County Clerk Chris Jacobs announced that he has received opt-out forms, which enable individual pistol permit holders to protect their information from ever being made public. These were obtained from the New York State Police.

Permit holders may print out a copy of the form at Fill it out and mail or fax it to the Erie County clerk.

All Erie County automobile bureaus also have copies of this form available, as does the Pistol Permit Office, located at 92 Franklin St. in Buffalo.

“The opt-out is a simple, one-page form that allows you to choose one of four reasons you desire to keep your information private,” Jacobs said. “Once the permit-holder completes the form, simply mail it or fax it into our office.”

Completed forms may be sent to Jacobs, c/o Pistol Permit Office, 92 Franklin St., Buffalo, NY 14202 or faxed to 858-6550, attention Pistol Permit Office.

Jacobs said that he believes the most common option for permit holders will be option No. 4, which said, “I have reason to believe that I may be subject to unwarranted harassment upon disclosure.”

The law allows permit-holders 60 days to exercise this opt-out provision, before an individual can make a request for public pistol records.

“We are encouraging pistol permit-holders who want assurance that their records will be kept private to complete the form immediately,” Jacobs said.
