Warm the Children keeps local children warm all winter long!
Oh, the weather outside is getting frightful - but this upcoming winter, some of our local children’s experiences may not be so delightful. As we all begin to celebrate the upcoming festive season, let’s take a moment to consider those around us who may be less fortunate, and see what we can do to help.

In the 1980s, Mark Stewart, who worked at a Troy, N.Y. newspaper, spearheaded a drive to collect warm winter clothing from his readers for donation to needy individuals in the community. His “Clothe the Child” endeavor eventually evolved into “Warm the Children,” which Stewart soon decided to take national.

According to Sharon Heinen at Love In the Name of Christ, Springville’s Warm the Children participation records go back to 1998. At that time, the Springville Journal was heavily involved with the organization, doing all of the publicity, organizing and record-keeping with program volunteer Lillian Case. She worked with and coordinated the volunteer shoppers, who obtained warm clothing for the needy kids.

In 2007, Love INC took over the organization and its record-keeping aspects, but Warm the Children’s efforts stay the same: to provide warm clothing to children in our area who need it.

Although Metro Group Inc.’s publications The Sun and the Journal do only the publicity side of Warm the Children now, we still want our readers to know how they can get involved.

Money that comes in for the program is put into a special fund to finance Warm the Children purchases. Names are submitted to Warm the Children, and volunteer shoppers, still overseen by Case, are assigned needy families. The shoppers and the families go to the store together to pick out warm articles of clothing. No local children will be cold this winter if Love INC and Warm the Children can help it!

Check out the Warm the Children informational ads that are running in our publication for the next several weeks. These ads include coupons that you can clip and send with your donation to Love INC at 62 East Main St., Springville, NY 14141. Or you can become a volunteer shopper!

Dig deep into your pockets this Christmas season and do what you can to make this a brighter, warmer season for our community’s children.
