The Springville Volunteer Fire Department again acknowledged the service and accomplishments of its own at the annual installation dinner and awards ceremony held Jan. 28.

Father Joseph Bayne gave the opening invocation, asking God for a “safe 2012 with a stronger mutual aid,” adding that he was thankful for the volunteers who gave their time to help keep the area safe.

Cocktails, music by T.N.T. Sound Systems and catering by Holland Willows kept attendees entertained as they waited for the ceremonies to begin. Line and executive officers and board of directors members were sworn in by Springville Mayor William Krebs, who acknowledged those who responded to the Jan. 24 fire on Maple Avenue and congratulated them on how they contained it. “The owners were very thankful for what you did,” he said. “You were the first ones who started the rebuilding of their home. Your skills are demonstrated at every call.”

The line officers include Chief Dennis Dains, First Assistant Chief Michael Cochran, Second Assistant Chief David Klenk, Third Assistant Chief Brian Benstead, Fourth Assistant Chief Rosanne Horn, Fire Captain Paul Smith, Fire Lieutenant John Narraway and Fire Lieutenant Robert Schueler.

Executive officers are President Wayne Kreitzbender, Vice President Leslie Gibbin, Recording Secretary Jim Jozwiak, Financial Secretary Tony Hunt and Treasurer Sandy Miller. Members of the board of directors include Klenk, Horn, Matt Dygert, Dave Dains, Smith and Cochran.

“Thank you to these individuals’ families for giving them up to service,” Krebs said. “The time you spend away from home is time you spend to serve. What you do is amazing.”

Support positions include Chaplain Paul Morley, Assistant Chaplain Jozwiak, EMS Administrator Miguel Negron III, Fire Police Captain Bill Horn, Fire Police Lieutenant Tom Salzler, Fire Police Lieutenant Charles Skelton and Fire Police Lieutenant John Lipoff. The Springville Volunteer Fire Department has 45 members, including honorary members Joseph Smith, Helen Smith and Daniel Stevens. There are also 11 life members and 32 exempt members. Springville Firemen’s Auxiliary officers were also sworn in. They include President Amy Botsford, Vice President Audrey Skelton, Secretary Beth Bolt, Financial Secretary Pat Cobo, Treasurer Joan Thompson and Sunshine Betty Rumfola. There are 18 auxiliary members.

Dennis Dains acknowledged all of the mutual aid companies, saying, “Whenever we call, they come running to help our residents out.” He thanked the Erie County Sheriff’s Fire Investigation Unit for helping out the department and acknowledged Rural Metro Emergency Services, Springville Control Center and Springville’s Department of Public Works.

“Every member here gives time and energy to ensure the safety of our residents,” Dains said. “It’s been a pleasure working with each and every one of you.” He also thanked the wives and husbands behind the scenes, adding, “May God bless each and every one of you.”

Members of Squad 10 include Bolt, Botsford, Cobo, Ginny Krebs, Cathy Ford, Henrietta Dell, Mary Hubert, Cathy Schueler, Audrey Skelton, Thompson and Carol Joslin.

Service pins were presented to Kreitzbender and Tony Hunt for five years of service each. Special awards were given to three individuals who assisted at an April 6 accident on Main Street that involved a tractor trailer’s going into a pond. Dains thanked these individuals for their “courage and bravery.” On her appreciation award, Debbie King was thanked for “the time and effort you gave the firemen to build our park.”

Jim Oatman was presented with the Outstanding Service Award. He joined the department in March 1974 and has been a member of the board of directors, active on many committees and more.

Top EMS responders were Holly Hunt, John Narraway and Horn. Following the annual “Doody Awards,” which encompass both “going beyond the call of duty and stepping in doody,” Jozwiak took a moment to remember fallen members Harry Schueler, Milfred Hebdon, Stan Krezmien and Harold Wohlhueter. He also showed a video in memory of those who died during the 9/11 attacks.

In his benediction, Bayne said, “We honor our brothers and sisters who’ve fallen. You’ve got a hell of a team here.”
