S-GI places third in Envirothon competition

SPRINGVILLE — A team from Springville-Griffith Institute placed third in the 2013 Erie County Envirothon, which was held March 26 and April 25 at Elma Senior Center/Village Green Park.

Each year, the Erie County Soil and Water Conservation District coordinates the science-based environmental, educational program known as Envirothon.

The event is open to all high school students and is supplemental to the high school science curriculum.

Participants are challenged by area professionals in aquatics, forestry, wildlife, soils and the 2013 current issue statement: “Sustainable Rangeland Management.”

Scholarships are available at the local, state and national levels.

This year’s participating schools included St. Mary’s School for the Deaf, Grand Island, Buffalo Homeschoolers, Orchard Park, East Aurora and Springville-Griffith Institute.

The Buffalo Homeschoolers’ team won first, East Aurora, second and S-GI, third.
