Springville-Griffith Institute announces top 10 graduating seniors

Rainah Umlauf is the Springville-Griffith Institute High School class of 2013 valedictorian, with a 100.09 grade point average. She is an advanced placement scholar with honors and received the President’s Education Award, the United States Department of Energy and New York State Energy Research Authority Award for physics, chemistry and biology; the Society of Mayflower Descendants Award for History and the American Legion Scholarship Award.

She was involved in the S-GI musical, the human rights group, National Honor Society, art club, a capella group, chamber choir and Seniors Offering Solutions and she coached the Battle of the Books.

Her hobbies include playing the piano, skiing, reading, volunteering, music and art. She said that she plans to major in international studies at Vassar College. She is the daughter of John and Melinda Umlauf.

Katie Patterson
Katie Patterson
Katie Patterson is the salutatorian of the class of 2013, with a 99.17 grade point average. She is an AP scholar with honors and received the Bausch and Lomb Honorary Science Award, the Society of Mayflower Descendants Award and the Air Force math and science awards. She was treasurer of the National Honor Society and was involved in Model UN and the high school musical. Her hobbies include reading, fishing and spending time with family and friends.

She will study chemistry at the State University of New York at Geneseo. She is the daughter of Rebecca and the late James Patterson.

Samantha Wach
Samantha Wach
Samantha Wach is ranked third in the S-GI class of 2013, with a 98.52 grade point average. She received the RIT Computing Medal Award, the President’s Education Awards Program award for outstanding academic excellence and the National Scholar Athlete Award, from the U.S. Army Reserve.

She participated in varsity swimming and diving, varsity basketball, jazz band, chamber choir, National Honor Society, Bible club, student government and marching band. Her hobbies include ultimate frisbee, reading, swimming, running and spending time with friends.

She said that she plans to study accounting at Grove City College. She is the daughter of Jeff and Carrieann Wach.

Brandy Burgard is ranked fourth in her class, with a grade point average of 98.49. She is an AP scholar with honors and an All Western New York scholar athlete. She has received a perfect attendance award, every year, since kindergarten.

She won the President’s Award for Outstanding Academic Excellence, President’s Education Award, the New York State Science Education Leadership Association biology and physics award and was a science fair winner. She was involved in the National Honor Society, was president of the international club, treasurer of the key club, captain of the cheerleading team and Bible club treasurer and she participated in varsity indoor and outdoor track, varsity tennis, Model UN and concert, marching, jazz and pep bands.

Her hobbies include Young Life, skiing, community service, boating, biking, reading, waterskiing and wakeboarding. She is a Red Cross-certified lifeguard, a ski instructor at Holiday Valley and a member of the Professional Ski Instructors of America. She said she plans to study accounting at Canisius College. She is the daughter of George and Faith Burgard.

Tara Felser
Tara Felser is ranked fifth in her class, with a grade point average of 98.29. She is an AP scholar with honors and received the United States Marine Corps Scholarship Excellence Award. She was part of the National Honor Society, varsity bowling, varsity soccer, art club, the high school musical and chorus and played the viola in the orchestra. Her hobbies include cooking, baking, bowling and painting. She is a Windom Community Church Volunteer.

She said she will major in nutrition at Syracuse University. She is the daughter of Paul and Cheryl Felser.

Jesse Maeder
Jesse Maeder is ranked sixth in the S-GI class of 2013, with a grade point average of 98.27. He is an AP scholar, a scholar athlete and a National Merit Scholarship commended student, was on the honor roll and received the Alfred State College Excellence in Education Scholarship, the RIT Presidential Scholarship, the President’s Award for Educational Excellence and the RIT Innovation and Creativity award. He was a member of the National Honor Society, captain of the varsity boys tennis team and played varsity golf. His hobbies include playing guitar and math. His favorite movie is “Toy Story.”

He said he is planning to study computer science at the Rochester Institute of Technology. He is the son of Erik and Libby Maeder.

Lauren Robel is ranked seventh in her class, with a grade point average of 97.88. She was an AP scholar with honors, received the Presidential Academic Achievement Award and was a United States Achievement Academy honoree. She was involved in the National Honor Society, varsity volleyball, Seniors Offering Solutions, Bible club, chorus, chamber choir and the high school musical. Her hobbies include volleyball, singing, geocaching, reading, euchre, camping and running.

She said she will major in physician assistant studies at Daemen College. She is the daughter of Matthew and Marnie Robel.

Juliana Foster is ranked eighth in her class, with a 97.67 grade point average. She was on the honor roll and received an academic excellence award. She was involved in the National Honor Society and made morning announcements at school. Her hobbies include reading, baking, traveling and spending time with friends and family.

She said she will major in business at Bryant and Stratton College. She is the daughter of Robert and Terri Foster.

Carlee Frank
Carlee Frank is ranked ninth, in the Springville-Griffith Institute class of 2013, with a grade point average of 97.51. She received the Department of Energy Award for Earth science, the Spanish III Award and an award of academic excellence. She was senior class secretary and involved in the high school musical, chamber choir, Model UN, junior varsity cheerleading, National Honor Society and a capella.

Her hobbies include singing, traveling, theater and spending time with friends. She said she is planning to study international relations in the scholars program at Ohio State University. She is the daughter of Timothy and Jeanne Frank.

Kelsey Geyer
Kelsey Geyer
Kelsey Geyer is ranked 10th in her class, with a 97.21 grade point average. She was on the high honor roll and received the Presidential Award. She also played mallet percussion in the All County Orchestra, in 2010. She was involved in National Honor Society, concert band, marching band, orchestra, chorus, chamber choir and varsity tennis and she tutored.

Her hobbies include hiking, riding all-terrain vehicles, reading, listening to and playing music and watching movies.

She said she is planning to major in civil engineering at Ohio State University. She is the daughter of George Geyer and Lisa Kelley.
