Local students perform at Area 1 SkillsUSA competitions

SPRINGVILLE — Students from Springville-Griffith Institute High School, who attend career and technical education programs at the Erie 2 Chautauqua-Cattaraugus BOCES Ormsby Educational Center in East Aurora, recently performed at the SkillsUSA Area 1 Regional Conference, held at Alfred State College.
Students from the greater Western New York region were eligible to participate, in this event. Several local students won first or second place, in their respective competitions.
Dakota Hecht, who studies animal care at the Ormsby Center, with instructor Denise Skora, won first place, in the animal careers competition. She won second place, last year. Hecht was also a student of the month at the Ormsby Center and was among a handful of students who had the opportunity to meet with Dr. Robert King Jr., New York state commissioner of education, during his recent visit to the region.
Nate Stressing, who studies automotive body repair at the Ormsby Center, with instructor Richard Drewery, won first place, in the auto body helper competition.
Leiah Mesch, who studies cosmetology at the Ormsby Center, with instructors Denise Heary and Cheryl Russell, won second place, in the junior cosmetology competition.
SkillsUSA is a national organization with a stated goal of promoting academic excellence and professionalism among high school students enrolled in programs, such as those offered by the E2CC BOCES.
