Early Bird Childcare Center makes reading literature fun

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, CLIFFORD — Isabella Hines, Emilee Grigsby, Harrison Hoffman and Justin Emerling peruse “Clifford the Big Red Dog” books, to celebrate that character’s 50th birthday.
SPRINGVILLE — When cold winds were blowing and temperatures were falling, students at Early Bird Childcare Center in Springville participated in a month of celebrating literature, with each week’s featuring stories by preschool authors.

SNOW MUCH FUN — Cole Gabel and Makenna Shimburski are pictured hanging out together, during the first week of January.
“Jan Brett’s ‘Mitten’ is a delight for all ages,” said Colleen Brecker of Early Bird. On Jan. 3 and 4, students played a mitten scramble and match game. Once they found their matching mittens, the kids put the gloves on and spent time playing at the snow table.

During Jan. 7 –11, the Early Bird students let loose, with Mother Goose. They were introduced to the world of Charles Parrault, “whose stories marked the beginning of a new literary genre, the fairy tale,” Brecker said.

JACK BE NIMBLE — Carlynn Heckathorn jumps over a candlestick during Mother Goose week, while Kayden Proper and Brooke Ruzycki look on.
“From jumping over the candlestick to Miss Muffet and her spider, [the] boys and girls were actors on the Early Bird stage.”

‘S’ IS FOR SNAKE — Emily Manzone gives Early Bird student Maddox Wheeler a medal for the longest stuffed pet, brought to school for the stuffed pet show.
Brecker said that the children enjoyed “the delightful Ezra Jack Keats stories.” The kids sang songs and played games, to go along with reading “The Snowy Day” and “Whistle for Willie.” “One of their favorite things to do, this third week of January (Jan. 14 – 18), was to have their own stuffed pet show,” she said.

HAVE A SLICE — Gianna Nevins, Emma Benz and Alana Anthony show off their giant pizzas, made during “P” week, at Early Bird.
William Steig, the author of “Pete’s a Pizza,” helped the students celebrate “P” week Jan. 28 – Feb. 1.

“As we acted out the story, we were the pizza,” Brecker said. A pajama party day with pretend pizza was a project for the toddlers.

“No month of popular preschool authors would be complete without Norman Bridwell, author of the beloved ‘Clifford the Big Red Dog’ series,” Brecker said.

The Early Bird students celebrated Clifford’s 50th birthday on Feb. 28.
