Victoria Calkins wins county award

WEST VALLEY — Anthony Evans, executive director of the Cattaraugus County Youth Bureau, announced that Victoria Calkins is this week’s featured Youth Citizenship Award winner.

Calkins is the daughter of Ronald and Denise Calkins and is a senior at West Valley Central School.

The student has been a volunteer with West Valley’s Service Learning Program, for two years. She has volunteered at the Buffalo City Mission and helps out with the school’s Red Cross blood drives.

Calkins is a member of the National Honor Society and has served on the student council. She is also a three-year member of the International Connections Club.

She has played on the WVCS varsity soccer, basketball and track teams. She was captain of the track team, for two years. Calkins was named the athlete of the week and most improved player, while on her school’s basketball team.

Calkins said that she plans to major in physical therapy at Daemen College, following her high school graduation.

Nominations for youth citizen awards for the current program year must be received by April 1. Eligible candidates must be Cattaraugus County residents who will graduate from high school, during the 2012 – 2013 school year.
