Early Bird school-aged day camp summer fun

FUN IN THE SUN — Early Bird students are pictured hanging out together at the Springville spray park on a warm summer day.

SPRINGVILLE –– Early Bird day campers have spent their summer swimming at the Early Bird pool, bowling with friends, hopping on the bus for field trips, dabbling in arts and crafts, playing in Wii™ tournaments and visiting the Springville spray park. The New York state-certified day camp teachers created a summer full of weekly themes for their students to participate in.

To kick off the season, the students visited Springville’s weekly auction to celebrate the theme “the country life.” The following week included a pool party at the Early Bird American Red Cross-certified aquatic training center, which has been located at Early Bird’s main office, Pat Marcello’s home, for 32 years. By the third week, the campers were “having fun keeping fit” as they traveled to a teacher’s home to set up their own Olympic games.

During week four, “we can make a difference for wildlife,” the students cast their votes to select two animals to adopt in a Buffalo Zoo program that uses those funds to feed the adopted animals. The winners were the lowland gorilla and the river otter. Children got to see their new, adopted “animal family members” on a zoo field trip. Since they could not take the live animals home, the children bought stuffed versions of each for their Early Bird classrooms.

“Under the sea: A whale of a good time” included pirates, treasures, student-made boats to race and a trip to the Buffalo Science Museum’s grossology exhibit.

Day campers will soon participate in “science on a nature walk” week by taking a trip to Hawk Creek Wildlife Center, where they will view a live flight demonstration by the birds of prey and have a campout in the indoor gym. During “carnival week,” the students will set up a carnival that will include games and prizes for the younger campers and visits from “Picadilly the Clown” and “Patrick the Amazing Magician.”

A Glenn Colton concert and talent show will take place during “showtime week.” The summer will culminate with “summer memories week,” including the construction of a memory wall, lunch at McDonald’s and an end-of-summer cookout.
