Support our FFA and agricultural foundation

Our community needs to know how important the FFA and agricultural studies are. For the past 2 years, our FFA has been led by Kathy Degenfelder, who saved the organization from extinction. At the annual banquet in June, she announced she feels the FFA deserves to be run ďthe right way,Ē meaning by a certified agricultural teacher. Mr. Vanderlip announced he will make sure the FFA stays alive and will actively seek a part-time agricultural teacher to help keep the agricultural programs here at S-GI alive.
It is with great relief, our program will continue under strong direction. I know people donít realize how important this is. Itís not just to give our students opportunities for more electives, or after school programs. Agriculture is the basis of our lives. Without it, you donít eat! Our community was built on agriculture and hands-on hard work. Not all students are going to college. Many are looking for the opportunity to get their hands dirty and work long hours, in the careers and occupations that are so needy for qualified, hardworking people.
So many of our students, who are struggling in classes, absolutely thrive and shine in vocational programs because this is what they love. This is who they are. Kathy Degenfelder deserves so much credit, for keeping our FFA alive and instilling hope in our upcoming generation. The FFA has grown into the middle school and, with continued support from our community, board of education, teachers and parents; they can continue to do great things.
I encourage you, our community, to make your convictions known, through board meetings and supporting events and businesses, that help our hardworking students shine! Keep in mind, without agriculture, nobody eats.
