Firearms reduction will not stop recent gun violence

Editor:

Many people equate guns to violence, as seen in movies, television and the real world. Unfortunately, we could name numerous school shootings, military base shootings and movie theater shootings, where shootings have taken place. Those were also “Gun-Free Zones.” So, an intelligent, rational, thinking person would assume that if nobody had guns, we would live in a safer world.

This thinking may also conclude that if one got rid of seat belts and air bags, we would be safer driving a car. But we drivers have seat belts and air bags because we know that, in the unfortunate instance of a crash, seat belts and air bags will most likely reduce the amount of injury to those in an automobile.

So it is with firearms. Good people armed with a firearm can possibly reduce or eliminate the threat, pain and suffering caused by a criminal. Also possibly eliminate the pain and suffering of innocent people.

But make no mistake. If you do not have the means to forcefully be able to defend yourself or loved ones, you will not have the means to stop someone from victimizing you.

Criminals do not give advance warnings of who or where they plan an attack. If you ever found yourself in a situation where an attack was taking place, would you rather have or not have the opportunity to be able to possibly defend your very life or the lives of your spouse and children?

Wouldn’t it be nice if we could snap our fingers and click our heels and wish all the bad people would not have guns? But in the real world, bad people have guns, along with other means of committing violence. And in the real world, you would need to be able to prevent harm coming at you, with defensive force of your own. Whether you agree or not, I am speaking of the real world.

Hollywood loves showing gun violence all the time, but never shows the real story with law-abiding men and women, husbands and wives and grandparents from preventing themselves from being victims from assaults or murdered. Ask yourself, why is this? Maybe it’s a political agenda. Hollywood is far from Springville, the real world, and it constantly misrepresents gun owners.

Politicians constantly ignore the crime statistics of their own agencies. Crime statistics prove that where good people are armed, crime rates are low. Chicago, New York City, Detroit and even Washington, D.C., our nation’s capitol, have the highest murder rates. Gun ownership for the average, honest person is almost impossible or is impossible in these cities.

Our political leaders, along with movie stars, are protected by armed guards. Take away our right to defend ourselves from criminals or a tyrannical government is a right we must never lose, because once it’s gone, we’ll never get it back.
