As an active and concerned S-GI parent and taxpayer, I am proud to support the school board candidacy of both Chris Cerrone and Jenny Sullivan. I believe that Chris and Jenny have the desire, perseverance and experience to move SGI forward, so that our district and community can capitalize on its strengths and give students diverse and enriching educational opportunities.
Anyone who knows Chris knows that he dedicates countless hours of his free time to the children of this community, as an SYI volunteer, coach and organizer. Chrisí understanding of education policy, and his courage and action in clearly communicating and promoting advocacy on behalf of students, parents and taxpayers, make him an outstanding candidate for our school board.
As recently as last year, I often heard administrators and school board members complain that they were powerless in fighting crippling unfunded mandates that are being forced upon districts. Chris and many on our current school board have shown us otherwise. Chris is a rational, eloquent and tireless force in teaching citizens to organize and make their voices heard. He has established excellent bipartisan working relationships with many influential legislators, educators, administrators and members of the media, to help advance rational and sound educational practices with the best interests of kids and taxpayers in mind.
Likewise, as a life-long resident of Colden and the parent of four children, Jenny Gusch Sullivanís primary motivation has always been to ensure that students in this district have the same wide ranging opportunities that she had as a student and that made her want to return here to raise her family. Jenny is an active volunteer at CES and community organizations. As a stay-at-home mom and taxpayer, she is mindful of the fact that both school budgets and family budgets are tight. Jenny is not afraid to ask questions and work to get answers. As an active parent advocate, she understands the frustration of many in this community who often feel that their concerns fall on deaf ears when addressing the S-GI board and administration. As a result, Jenny has been instrumental in organizing parents, administrators and board members in documenting their concerns and working together to resolve conflicts and focus on what school is supposed to be about: a positive and wide ranging learning atmosphere for children.
In the interest of open communication, both Chris and Jenny have invited those with questions to e-mail them (firstname.lastname@example.org and email@example.com), visit their Facebook pages (www.facebook.com/ElectCerrone and www.facebook.com/ElectSullivan) and/or speak with them directly.
I wholeheartedly believe that both Chris and Jenny are uniquely qualified to serve on the next S-GI school board. Sullivan and Cerrone are a step forward for S-GI. I will be voting for them on May 20.
