School board president drops out of Springville-GI race

For the past three years, it has been my honor to serve and be a member of the Springville-Griffith School Board, the last two as president.
An untimely, out-of-the-country consulting assignment has forced me to withdraw from running, in this year’s board election, although I hope to be back in the race, next year.
I am reminded of where we have been, as a board, the last three years. Like the school boards before us, as a team, we have gone through some very challenging times.
We removed a superintendent and searched for and hired a great one. We were challenged to reduce our spending and, by doing so, unfortunately had to reduce our excellent staff by over 40 people. We have cut excess wherever possible, reviewed all operating procedures and will continue to do so. We voted on staff union contracts. We worked hardest, however, to keep an excellent education program, for the children of this district.
We are fortunate, as a community, to have an excellent education institution. Day in and day out, our children are challenged, by their teachers.
S-GI has outstanding offerings in many disciplines whether academic, career/college preparation, the arts, sports or reaching beyond the bounds of our county, state or country. As with any large operation, there are issues, sure, but let’s concentrate on what we have: a great learning institution.
Teachers are not the only heroes in our district, though. They are part of a team of support staff, aids, assistants, cleaners, maintenance, bus drivers and administrators, who work hard to ensure our children’s success and safety, on a daily basis.
S-GI could use your help, though. Can you volunteer your talents? How about helping the PTA? Own a business? How about taking on a high school intern?
You can support local fundraisers, whether it is for the Education Foundation or a student club. Or, how about the next time there is a negative comment, about our school, you set the record straight and talk about the good things that are happening at S-GI, home of the Griffins!
