Springville Journal letter: Bill Bursee announces candidacy for school board
Wednesday April 24, 2013 | By:Bill Bursee |
I am running for the Springville-Griffith Institute School Board of Education.
Running for a seat on the board of education is not a decision that I took lightly. I became a candidate, for the board, for several reasons, but, most importantly, I feel it is my obligation to pay it forward to this school system and community that has done so much, to enhance the quality of life, for myself and my family, in the past 14 years.
I have taken pride in participating in school functions and community activities, such as volunteering at the elementary level, for the wonderful and educational reading programs that our PTA and elementary school would run, while my children, Tyler and Olivia, attended SES.
I have been fortunate enough to volunteer and coach my children’s athletic teams, from T-ball, to Little League football, to varsity football.
I have also taken pride in volunteering and building musical stage sets, for our talented high school musical productions.
Being involved in these activities has allowed me to understand the level of commitment it takes to run such amazing music programs and the importance it has for the positive development of our children.
Currently, I am a member of the Springville-Griffith Community Education Foundation Board. Through this board, we raise money to help support our school and community, in the way of small and large grants.
We made sure that our high school did not lose the jazz band, by supplementing the cost to keep the program running. We have also fulfilled grants for SYI, the Boys & Girls Club, Springville Center for the Arts and many more.
I believe the arts, music and sports programs play a pivotal role, in shaping our children into the young men and women they become. I have seen that, through the experiences of my son and daughter.
I feel, when you are given the opportunity to cast a vote that affects so many lives, in so many different ways, you need to consider what the outcome will bring.
My mission as a school board member will be to conduct myself as a facilitator, for the voice of the taxpayer, the voice of the educator and, most of all, the voice of the student. I love this community and I applaud the support of the parents who are involved with their children’s academics and extracurricular activities.
I know, as a school board member, I would be open-minded and make informed decisions, based on the best interest to everyone involved. My No. 1 focus will be on the education of our children and preserving this amazing community.
I want everyone to experience the true greatness of our school district and community. We need to pull together, as a community and make the things that matter, work!
I would be interested in speaking with any S-GI residents about my candidacy and thoughts on the district’s future. Contact me at firstname.lastname@example.org or 578-4403.
