Last November, a book, “Through The Eyes Of A Panther, The History of Gowanda Football” was unveiled. A local club was rented to distribute the book and display various Gowanda football memorabilia. The reunion also brought back many GCS alumni who had scattered throughout Western New York and several that had moved away, but returned for the Thanksgiving weekend.
Over 100 books were distributed, that evening. But that was only the beginning.
Over the past four months, several hundred Gowanda football high school and youth alumni, to include coaches, players, cheerleaders, majorettes, announcers and statisticians, have been contacted and responded through the Internet, Facebook, written letters and phone calls. The result has been threefold.
First, there are now close to 300 books in the hands of interested Gowanda alumni that reside in 27 states. Second, the chance to reconnect or meet former Panthers, Packers and Jets has been enjoyable.
And third, several rival players and coaches from Springville, Olean, Dunkirk, Fredonia, Southwestern, Falconer, Pioneer and Salamanca now have the book in their homes.
We will continue to reach out, over the next few months, to interested alumni, relatives and rivals, until all 500 books are gone.
