Springville Field and Stream tackles NY SAFE Act

I’d like to quote segments from a letter to residents of Erie County from the top law enforcement officer of Erie Country, Sheriff Tim Howard. If you haven’t read it, it was in the Money Saver, Feb. 8, 2013, Volume 3, No. 3 page 5.

It speaks of our right to self defense, as an inherent right bestowed upon us by our creator.

“Rank and file police officers see, every day, the aftermath of violent criminal attacks on defenseless victims. The uniformed police officers paraded out as window-dressing, during the signing of the SAFE Act, are simply lap dogs’ seeking to further their own political ambitions.

This law will do nothing to reduce violent crime, as it is painfully clear that those intent on victimizing others will ignore its provisions. It will simply create more victims.

Our Second Amendment is for protecting us against this exact type of overreaching, tyrannical government, not for hunting or recreational shooting.”

The Columbine High School massacre was a school shooting which occurred on April 20, 1999. Twelve people were murdered, that day.

Now, after 14 years of numerous school and gun-free zones massacres, the politicians in Albany, N.Y. have proven how inept their leadership has become, by passing the law known as the SAFE Act. In the intervening years, we have tried to prevent guns from coming into the schools, rather than having armed security to protect the children.

Gov. Cuomo, in his attempt to beat President Obama to the punch in gun control laws, has passed a law that not only does nothing to keep guns out of the hands of killers, but also does nothing to protect our school children, teachers and bus drivers, or anyone in a so-called “gun-free zone.”

The SAFE Act increases penalties for certain fire-armed-related crimes, including the murder of a first responder or for possession of a firearm on school grounds or a bus.

Now, the SAFE Act makes it more of a crime to murder someone. Does anyone actually believe making duplicate laws that are not obeyed by criminals in the first place is going to make gun-free zones safer? Gun-free zones are only safe for killers.

Inquiries to the New York State Police regarding how much ammunition can be purchased or what criteria is being used to qualify to purchase have been answered with “We don’t know” responses. This is not meant to embarrass or berate our state police, but to point out this law is so badly written they don’t even understand it.

A number of .22 rimfire rifles and pistols used by students on school shooting teams are now “assault weapons,” because they have a thumb hole or a 10-round magazine.

The last group of people in this country outlawed to have guns were slaves.

If you don’t think that this law is the start of banning/registering and seizing all weapons, just look at England, Australia and Canada.
