COLDEN — Mike Newman, owner of Colden Country Inn, has been offering “good food in an unpretentious setting” to hungry Southtowns residents in the town of Colden for eight years.
Newman and his wife Tracy both spent many years in the restaurant field, before deciding to open their own business in 2004. Colden Country Inn is now located in a building that dates back to 1837 and may have welcomed travelers on the old wagon trail.
The building has undergone many changes and expanded services, since the Newmans opened, in what had been exclusively a bar. “It’s been a work in progress,” Mike Newman said, noting that he and his wife have already upgraded the kitchen three times.
Today, the Colden Country Inn serves dinner from 4:30 – 9 p.m. and welcomes patrons to the bar from 3 p.m. – close, every day.
The most recent kitchen upgrade included new pizza ovens, which allow the Newmans to offer a full pizza menu, in addition to their regular food items, which range from sandwiches to salads to seafood. Daily specials include chicken wing night on Mondays, jumbo soft shell tacos on Taco Tuesdays, roast beef night or a pizza special on Wednesdays, $1 off whole subs on Thursdays, spaghetti and meatballs on the second Thursday of every month and fish fry’s and fresh seafood on Fridays. In addition to daily pizza specials, Newman said that he often features wild game and other “easy, friendly family food.”
Check the business’s Facebook page for more details about the restaurant’s specials.
TAKE A SEAT — Colden Country Inn’s dining room and bar, eclectically decorated to present visitors with a hometown feel, are open every day.
Live music is featured at the restaurant every Saturday, during the winter and every Saturday and Monday, during the summer. During warmer weather, patrons may listen to the music outside, on the side deck, which seats approximately 45.
Newman’s edible offerings are also available for events, through Newman’s Custom Catering. “The menu can be customized to meet any need or budget,” he said, adding that the catering business can accommodate any size group. The restaurant’s back dining room is available for small gatherings, at any time of day.
Colden Country Inn’s bar features an 18-tap beer selection, including craft beers and many specials. Between eight and 10 of the offerings are staples and the rest are switched out, depending on the season.
Newman said that he tries to feature local breweries, such as Ellicottville Brewing Company, Ithaca Beer Company and Southern Tier Brewing Company, whenever possible. “I go with what sells,” he said, “and I get a lot of ideas from my customers.”
Visitors who would like to stay in Colden for a longer period of time can check out the business’s overnight inn, which features four bedrooms, two bathrooms and a shared community lounge. Continental-style breakfasts are included in the stay price and a winter ski package is also available.
“I love being in Colden,” Newman said. “I get lots of repeat business. Most of my customers are my friends.”
