Sardinia schedules Fireman’s Carnival

SARDINIA — The Sardinia Town Board has placed a condition with the Memorial Volunteer Fire Company of Chaffee-Sardinia, to waive the park fees for the department’s carnival, pending a contract agreement with the landowner on Genesee Road, where its fire hall is located.

The board has received a copy of an Acknowledgment of Lease Validity for the fire hall. The Fireman’s Carnival will take place June 28 – 30.

The board also selected Betsy Marsh, in her position as town clerk, to receive notices of claims served upon the secretary of state by mail, at 12320 Savage Road, PO Box 219, Sardinia, NY 14134 and email at The General Municipal Law requires towns to file a certificate with the secretary of state, designating an agent for service of a notice of claim.

The town of Sardinia receives much of its revenues from tipping fees paid by Waste Management, under a municipal host agreement. These fees have helped the town take steps to ensure financial responsibility for its other expenses. The governmental body may use funds only for a “public purpose,” but a targeted tax relief plan, under which qualifying residents would receive a return of a portion of the taxes they have paid, would be an acceptable use of public finances.

The board also heard a request from Suburban Adult Services Inc. regarding the use of the Sardinia Town Hall gym, for the 2013 – 2014 school year. The board determined that SASi has always been “respectful to the building and staff in the past,” therefore the utilization of the gym during the upcoming school year was approved.

The Chaffee-Sardinia senior trip has been approved by the board, with the stipulation that the trip’s cost is not to surpass $4,000, paid to Horizon Club Tours. The trip is scheduled for July 18.

The board also reappointed Thelma Hornberger as the town of Sardinia tax assessor, effective Oct. 1. This is a six-year term, that will last until Sept. 30, 2019. Hornberger’s current term is scheduled to expire on Sept. 30. She has been Sardinia’s assessor for the last six years.

The board will next meet on July 11 at 6:30 p.m.
