Lizz Schumer, the new editor, takes the helm at the Springville Journal

Lizz Schumer has been named the new editor of the Springville Journal. She will replace former editor Jessie Owen, who will be serving as the editor of the Sun, which is headquartered in Hamburg. Owen had been the editor of the Journal for two years.

Schumer began working as the staff reporter for the Springville Journal in April 2011, and has covered local news, events and features. In 2012, Schumer won two awards from the Local Media Association editorial contest, a national association of community newspapers. She received an honorable mention, for the Aug. 4 article, “Spring Creek Pharmacy in Springville robbed for narcotic pain medication” and a third place award, for editorial writing for the Aug. 25 editorial, “They said what?”

Schumer holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in journalism and mass communication from St. Bonaventure University and a Master of Fine Arts degree in creative writing from Goddard College.

In addition to the Journal, Schumer has also done editorial work for USA WEEKEND MAGAZINE, Buffalo Spree Magazine, the Buffalo News “NeXt” section, Auxiliary Magazine and served as the editor in chief of The Pitkin Review literary journal.

When not in the newsroom, Schumer also teaches creative writing for National Geographic Student Expeditions and creative writing continuing education classes in the Hamburg and Frontier school districts. Her fiction, poetry and creative nonfiction pieces have appeared in a wide variety of literary magazines and journals, both locally and nationally. She was nominated for a Pushcart Prize in 2012 and her first book, “Buffalo Steel” will hit shelves in October.

“I look forward to continuing our efforts to deliver the best community news, sports coverage and local features to Springville, Concord and the towns and villages that make up our distribution area,” Schumer said, of her new role.

“I’m excited to continue to hear from our readers and local residents about how we can grow and improve, since we are always working to stay current, stay fresh and focused on what matters, to the community we serve.”
