NORTH TONAWANDA - With budget cuts and cuts on spending, many local schools are forced to cut back on social events and extra curricular activities. In the efforts to maintain funds for students at Ohio Elementary School, parents will host their annual fund-raiser.

The parent sponsored not for profit organization, Ohio Home Interest Organization (OHIO), will host its annual Theme Basket Raffle at 6 p.m. Friday, March 9, at Ohio Elementary School, 625 Ohio St., North Tonawanda.

Co-President of OHIO Nadia Rosky and her fellow committee members are requesting the assistance of OHIO parents, small businesses in North Tonawanda, and the public through donations of a theme basket, gift cards, or monetary donations that will either be raffled off or contributed to the final total of funds raised for the event.

“This is something we do every year. There isn’t extra money for the students to go on field trips or anything along those lines,” said Rosky. “This is our largest fund-raiser. The money we raise from this event is put toward field trips for the students.”

The OHIO committee raised $7,000 last year and they up to do they same or exceed that amount at this years event.

“The cost for these trips is getting higher,” said Rosky. “We used to get funding for the busses, but now we have to pay for that cost ourselves.”

Funds raised at the event are distributed evenly to each grade level. Field trips often include Old Fort Niagara, the Buffalo Zoo, the planetarium, farms, and many more.

With the help of teachers and Principal Michael Tambroni, the committee has arranged for a live DJ and food to be at the event. Parents of OHIO students and members of the public are invited to take part in the fifth annual event.

Item winners will begin to be called at 7:30 p.m. and continue until every item is won. Winners do not have to be present to win.

“This is a nice event. It’s open to the public and we have a lot of nice things to win,” said Rosky.

There will also be 50/50 raffle - winner must answer a question to win.

For local businesses or individuals who are interested in donating, but unable to attend the event may make checks payable to Nadia Rosky, or Ohio Elementary School and send them to 625 Ohio Street, North Tonawanda.

Pick-up arrangements for basket donations may be made by contacting Rosky at 444-6727.
