MARILLA - The Kiwanis Club of Marilla is one of the Kiwanis Clubs that sponsor the Key Club at Iroquois Central High School.
Key Club is a branch of Kiwanis International, and open to high school students. Many members of Key Club go on to join Kiwanis International as they continue to serve the community.
It was reported that the ICHS club has about 50 members, and that their activities include collecting canned goods, clothes and other articles for FISH of East Aurora, as a fundraiser, they sell candygrams, and for Valentine’s Day, carnations.
Funds raised are contributed to Ronald McDonald House, and they also work at special holiday parties given for people with special needs.
They also volunteer at the annual pancake breakfasts put on by the Elma and Marilla Kiwanis Clubs.
Elizabeth Dehr was a guest at the dinner as well. Dehr works in the guidance office at ICHS and is the liaison between the Key Club members and the local Kiwanis Clubs.
A presentation to the Kiwanis Club of Marilla on the local project called “Helping Hands” was given by Colleen Edwards. She is the social worker at ICHS and helps to coordinate this program. She stated that the program started about six years ago, and they receive donations from different events and organizations.
She mentioned that 100 percent of what they donate to recipients stays in the Iroquois Central School District. The staff at school contacts them with the names of needy families so that information can be kept confidential.
The Kiwanis Club was very interested to hear about this program, and were able to make donations to “Helping Hands” and the Key Club from the funds it raises at various events. One of these events in the annual pancake breakfast which will be held from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday, March 18th at the Marilla Fire Company Rec Hall on West Avenue and Two Rod Road in town.
In addition to the “all you can eat” pancake breakfast, baskets will be available to raffle and the annual TV raffle will begin selling ticket that day for a 46” RCA HD TV.
Take-outs are available for the breakfast, so you can pick up a breakfast and go, or stay and enjoy the company of your neighbors while you enjoy this meal.
The club is donating funds raised at this event to the Laurie and John Cullen family, so your help with this fundraiser is greatly appreciated.
