Shop local initiative in Springville runs through the end of December

SPRINGVILLE — Snow or no, the Christmas season is fully underway in Western New York and the Springville Area Chamber of Commerce is bringing back its annual drive, to encourage the community to keep its shopping dollars local.
“Every Christmas season, the chamber sponsors a ‘shop local’ program that encourages and rewards people for making the choice to purchase Christmas and holiday items locally, rather than traveling outside the area, and to thank the area’s businesses, all year long,” said SACC Executive Director Kate Moody.
Because local merchants support their community by cheering on local sports teams, contributing toward fundraisers and attending benefits for their friends and neighbors, the SACC is using this program to give back to those businesses, according to Moody. “They are very, very philanthropic and very giving, and so, the chamber encourages our local residents to give some thought, as to where they’re making their purchases.”
The chamber is asking community members to make their holiday purchases locally, as much as possible, “as opposed to driving outside the area and fighting the crowds, at malls,” Moody said.
She added that a sentiment she often hears is that many items cost less at malls and other big box stores than they do at local shops, but said that such price differences are minimal, at best. “The price difference would be mitigated, just in the sheer annoyance of fighting traffic and the price of gas,” she said.
To “reward and thank people for shopping locally,” the chamber is offering local shoppers the chance to win a $200 prize. Anyone making a purchase at a local, participating business is given a slip, listing the businesses involved in this endeavor, and a stamp next to the merchant they patronized.
The Concord Country Christmas Shop Local Program will continue through the month of December. Customers who obtain four stamps by the end of the month may drop their stamp card into one of the boxes located at each participating merchant. “They can enter as many times as they like; there’s no limit,” Moody said. “You just need to make a purchase. The more shopping you do locally, the greater your chance of winning.”
The chamber will collect all of the boxes on Dec. 31 and pick a winner on Jan. 1. The prize is a $200 gift certificate to any of the participating merchants. Approximately 25 businesses located throughout the chamber’s service area are currently participating in the Concord Country Christmas Shop Local Program.
“This is a classic shop local model that is used throughout the United States, in close-knit areas like ours,” Moody said. “They work very well. This gives shoppers an opportunity to thank the businesses that have been supporting their community, all year.”
