Reminder to local residents: Plowing snow onto streets is illegal

SPRINGVILLE — Erie County Sheriff Timothy Howard reported that the Erie County Division of Highways has contacted the sheriff’s office regarding snow being plowed onto or across public roadway.

Section 1219 of the New York State Vehicle and Traffic Law prohibits snow’s being deposited onto any highway. This section pertains not only to residents plowing their driveways and pushing snow across roadways, but also to private snow removal contractors.

Pushing snow across or onto a roadway can create hazardous driving conditions. Motorists may lose control when their vehicles strike snow that has been left in the highway, or when they swerve, in an attempt to avoid it.
