Robert Benz

Robert Benz


Robert C. Benz, 65, of Springville, died Jan. 31, at Buffalo General Hospital in Buffalo.

He was born on Sept. 8, 1948, to the late Carl and Marcella (nee Seider) Benz.

He was a graduate of Springville-Griffith Institute, was a self-employed carpenter and operated Benz Construction in Springville. He did woodworking, hunted, shot trap, spent time with his grandchildren and was a member of St. Aloysius Roman Catholic Church, in Springville.

He was the father of Adrienne (Gerald) Deloff, of Baldwinsville, N.Y., and Brady (Stephanie) Benz, of Springville; grandfather of Noah, Carolina and Mason.

A funeral service was held Feb. 5 from St. Aloysius Church. The Rev. Lawrence Cobel officiated. Burial was in St. Aloysius Cemetery, located in Springville.

Alex Hedges

Alex Hedges, 58, of Gowanda, died Jan. 27.

He was a United States Navy veteran, a member of the honor guard of Gowanda American Legion Post No. 409 and had worked for the New York State Department of Corrections.

He was the son of the late Richard and Ruth (nee Schiedel) Hedges; father of Dawn (Erica) Edbauer, of Kenmore, N.Y., Danielle (Chad) Marx, of Dunkirk, N.Y., Alex Hedges Jr., of Gowanda, and Richard Hedges, of Perrysburg, N.Y.; brother of Linda (Ted) Hapak, of Gowanda, and Judy (Dennis) Otto, of Springville; also survived by one grandchild and several nieces and nephews.

Expressions of sympathy may be made to the Gowanda Ambulance Service, P.O. Box 143, Gowanda, N.Y. 14070.

Arrangements were made by the Schindler Funeral Home, located in Gowanda.

Elizabeth Dedrick

Elizabeth “Betty” Hall Dedrick, 95, died Jan. 22, at her home.

She was born in Buffalo on June 12, 1918 to Walter and Vanona (nee Hall) Dedrick.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Springville, and also belonged to the Birthday Club, the Monday Club and the Retired Teachers Association. She volunteered for the Springville Food Pantry, Meals on Wheels and the Bertrand Chaffee Hospital gift shop, where she contributed to a nursing scholarship in her name.

She read, knitted, watched birds and taught fourth grade at Springville-Griffith Institute Elementary School for 31 years.

She attended Fredonia schools, earning a 10-year certificate in 1939, a bachelor’s degree in 1945 and a master’s degree in 1958. Her first teaching job was at a one-room school house in Mayville, N.Y., in 1939, and she taught at S-GI from 1945-1976.

She was the sister of the late Preston (late Virginia) Dedrick; aunt of William (Marcile) Dedrick, of Fuquay-Varina, N.Y., and Patricia (Ronald) Phillippsen, of Marion, N.Y.

Friends may call Feb. 15 from 2-4 p.m. at the Smith-Weismantel Funeral Home, located at 271 East Main St. in Springville. Burial was in the First United Methodist Church Columbarium in Springville. Expressions of sympathy may be made to Bertrand Chaffee Hospital, in Springville.

Betty Kestner

Betty L. Kestner (nee Rice), of Springville, died Jan. 28.

She was the wife of the late Donald Kestner; mother of Jim (Rita) Kestner, Joyce Weiss and Jean (Donald) Rindfuss; grandmother of Kim, David, Brad, Sheila, Tamara and Charity; great-grandmother of 13 great-grandchildren; sister of Thelma, Donald and the late Lynn, Janice; friend of Ed Hartzell.

A funeral service was held Feb. 3 from the Salem Lutheran Church, located on West Main Street in Springville.

Arrangements were made by the Wurtz Funeral Home, located at 9287 Boston State Road in Boston.

Michael Kihl

Michael T. Kihl, 55, died Dec. 29, in North Charleston, S.C.

He had attended Eden Central School.

He was the son of Valerie Kihl Sutton, of Springville, and the late Joseph Kihl; stepson of Harvey Sutton, of Springville; brother of Paul (Maryann) Kihl, of Buffalo; John (Maxine) Kihl, of Greensburg, Pa.; Patrick Evans, of Virginia, and Christopher Evans, of Holland, N.Y.; uncle of Kristopher (Wanda) Kihl, of New Jersey, and Philip Evans, of Holland.

A graveside service is planned for early summer.
