Dorothy Benns
Dorothy E. Benns, 51, of West Valley, died Jan. 23 at her home, following 22 years of living with breast cancer.

She was born in Buffalo on April 16, 1961, the daughter of Leota (nee Schneggenburger) and the late George Benns.

She was a 1979 graduate of Riverside High School in Buffalo. She was a florist, baker restaurant worker, waitress, dry cleaner and custodial worker. Her most recent employment was at M&T Bank in Ellicottville.

She lived in Charleston, S.C., for 16 years, before returning to Western New York. She was a member of St. Paulís United Methodist Church in West Valley, serving several years with the churchís camping program of the church. She also served with the KAR ministry program and helped begin an annual dinner and auction for the KAR. She was also a member of the Methodist Women and a was a sunshine person. She attended the school of Christian Missions and was a charter member of the Tabitha Sewing Group.

Ms. Benns worked with Love in the Name of Christ, especially in its Image Program, Family to Family, and its annual banquet and auction. She also was an organizer of the Salvation Army bell ringers at St. Paulís Church, participated in Warm the Children and with the Relay for Life, for which she carried a banner, two years ago. She recently attended the Western New York Walk to Emmaus and served as a volunteer for the Cattaraugus County Department of Aging Senior Wellness and Nutrition Program at West Valley.

She also decorated cakes, did quilting, watched movies and played Bingo and cards.

She was the daughter of Leota Benns; mother of Otis (Rachelle) Mitchum, John (Kristin) Mitchum and Lorraine (Tim Griffis) Mitchum; grandmother of three grandchildren; granddaughter of Dorothy Schneggenburger; sister of George (Pam) Benns, Nancy (Dave) Ruthford, Cheryl Hoeppner, Sue (Fred) Burdick, Robin (Donald) Snell and Dawn (Pat) Smith; also survived by several nieces and nephews.

A funeral service was held Jan. 28 from St. Paulís United Methodist Church of West Valley. The Rev. Dena Stevens officiated. Burial was in Elmlawn Cemetery, Buffalo, with the Rev. Joan Zimmermanís and Nancy Prestonís presiding.

Joyce M. (nee Booth) Welsted, 72, of Springville, died Jan. 18 at her home.

She was born July 13, 1940 in Buffalo, to the late Elbert and Dorothy (nee Abraham) Booth.

She was a dispatch and bus aide for Royal Transport Services, was a Springville Trading Post volunteer, read and gardened.

She was the wife of Arthur Welsted; mother of Kelly Booth of Gowanda and Jody (Joseph) Duda of Eden; grandmother of Angel, Dakota, Jake and Joshua; great-grandmother of Brayden, Kaylin and Jada; sister of William Booth, Herbert Booth, Donna Hamilton, Myra Moxham, Barbara Dunkleman, Robert Booth and the late Elbert Booth, Mary Jane Northrup and Jeffrey Booth.

A funeral service will be held Saturday, Feb. 2 at 2 p.m. from the Smith-Weismantel Funeral Home, located at 271 East Main St. in Springville.
