Leslie Baker

Leslie W. Baker, 90, of Springville, died April 7, at his home.

He was born in Northfield, Vt. on Oct. 23, 1923, to the late William and Priscilla (nee Yates) Baker.

He served in the United States Navy from Jan. 13, 1943 - Feb. 16, 1945, in the air corps machine gunnery battalion and completed 72 bombing and patrol missions in Cuba, South America, the coast of France and the Mediterranean Sea. He was discharged as an aviation machinist mate, third class.

He had been employed at Trico Products in Buffalo for 40 years and retired in 1998, as vice president of manufacturing.

He hunted, farmed, ran his bulldozer, cleared land and built his own home.

He was the husband of Frances (nee Bakowski) Baker; father of Craig (Ruby) Baker, of Christmas, Fla., Lance Baker, of Brant, N.Y., Pamela Jo (Larry) Snyder, of Springville and Penny (Gary) Anger of West Seneca; grandfather of Larry Snyder and Leslie Turner; great-grandfather of Haley Snyder and Robert Turner; brother of Earl (Ann) Baker of North Carolina and the late Wilson Baker; also survived by several nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held April 12, at 11 a.m., from the Smith-Weismantel Funeral Home, located at 271 East Main St. in Springville. The Rev. Richard Rolf will officiate. Burial will be in Maplewood Cemetery in Springville.

Joan Darszewski

Joan V. Darszewski, 82, of Sandusky, Ohio, formerly of Springville, died March 27, at Firelands Regional Medical Center in Sandusky.

She was born on Feb. 22, 1932, in Lackawanna, to the late Harold and Matilda (nee Perrin) Bragg. In 1951, she graduated from Springville-Griffith Institute High School.

She crocheted, made baby blankets and afghans, read and did crafts of all kinds.

She had been a 4-H leader and Girl Scout advisor.

She was the wife of the late Michael Darszewski; mother of Virginia Darszewski and Marjorie Darszewski, both of Sandusky and Susan (Dan) Morell, of Clyde, Ohio; grandmother of Audra, Anne, Jordan and Jared Morell; sister of Sharon Hawley of Arcade and the late Dean Bragg, Harold Bragg and Phyllis Reinard; sister-in-law of Carol Bragg, Loretta Ciszak, Stanley Darszewski and the late Pearl Darszewski, Raymond Darszewski and Elmer Ciszak.

A funeral service was held March 31, from the Norwalk Baptist Church in Norwalk, Ohio. Burial was in Maplewood Cemetery, Springville.
