Traffic stop in Ashford nets drugs

ASHFORD — New York State Troopers arrested Luis Ortiz, 27, of Rochester, for fifth-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance and unlawful possession of marijuana, following a traffic stop on Route 219 in Ashford on Feb. 13.

Troopers stopped the vehicle Ortiz was riding in, because he was observed not wearing a seat belt. While speaking with the female driver, troopers smelled a strong odor of marijuana coming from inside the vehicle.

The troopers spoke with the driver and then Ortiz. A marijuana cigarette was observed in the passenger side door handle, as Ortiz exited the vehicle. A subsequent search of the vehicle by troopers netted a zip-lock bag containing a small amount of cocaine, a bag containing marijuana and a wooden marijuana grinder, with marijuana in it.

Ortiz was processed at the state police barracks in Collins and arraigned in Ashford Town Court, where he posted $750 bail. He was due back in Ashford Court, at a later date.
