SPRINGVILLE — Sophie (nee Mrugala) Zukowski was born on May 1, 1913 in Buffalo to the late Katherine and Frank Mrugala. She had nine siblings: Mary, Stella, Josephine, John, Stanley, Frank Jr., Helen, Pauline and Leo.
She attended St. Aloysius Regional School, then worked at Ermatinger’s Restaurant on Route 39.
She married Frank Zukowski on October 19, 1935, at St. Aloysius Church in Springville. Msgr. Herman Zimmerman officiated.
She is the mother of three children, Pauline Stachowiak of Penn Yan, N.Y., June Stachowiak of Springville and Walter Zukowski of Arcade and mother-in-law of Lenny Stachowiak, Eve and Wendy Zukowski and the late Francis Stachowiak.
She has eight grandchildren: Cynthia, Dianna, Sharon, Daniel, Lenny Jr, Dennis, Scott and the late Thomas and three great grandchildren, Amelia and Alyssa Stachowiak and Dustin Clemens.
A pheasant farm in North Collins and Babua Bakery in Fowlerville, which was converted into an Amvets, employed Sophie Zukowski. She cooks meals for her family, during the holidays.
She visits with family, crochets, plays bingo and plays cards. The family has requested 100 cards to recognize her birthday. Among the cards will be a card from her St. Aloysius bingo friends, Bishop Edward Kmiec and President Barack Obama.
