Act funds training for veterans

CATTARAUGUS — President Barack Obama signed into law the bipartisan Vow to Hire Heroes Act of 2011, including the Veterans Retraining Assistance Program, which will provide up to 12 months of educational assistance to train unemployed veterans, ages 35 – 60. Congress enacted the program.

Veterans must meet the age criteria, be unemployed, have an other-than-dishonorable discharge, not be eligible for any other VA education benefit program, not be in receipt of VA compensation, due to individual unemployability and not be enrolled in a federal or state job training program.

Applications for the VRAP are currently being accepted. Participating veterans may receive up to 12 months of assistance, equal to the full-time Montgomery GI Bill-Active Duty rate, effective immediately. Assistance under this program ends March 31, 2014.

Unemployed veterans with a service-related injury may qualify for more vocational rehabilitation and employment benefits.

One of the local agencies that can help unemployed veterans who qualify receive job training is the Cattaraugus-Allegany BOCES, through its adult education program. Contact Team Leader for Employment Prep Theresa Schueckler at 376-8278.
