WEST VALLEY — The West Valley Volunteer Hose Company Inc. will open its doors to residents, in a stated effort to allow individuals to learn what it takes to be a volunteer firefighter. The open house will take place as part of the third annual RecruitNY statewide initiative.
On Saturday, April 27, from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m., the West Valley Volunteer Hose Company Inc. Fire Hall on Route 240, will join volunteer fire departments, across the state, for a unified recruitment drive, as part of National Volunteer Week 2013.
“Come on out and join us, for this unique recruitment day, at our firehouse,” said WVVHC Chief Kevin Murray.
“This is a great opportunity for our neighbors to observe the exciting tasks of a firefighter,” he said. “Our current members love what they do; they are everyday heroes who help neighbors in need. We hope our recruitment day will inspire other area residents to join our fire service family.”
The Springville Volunteer Fire Department will hold an open house and recruitment day, also as part of the unified recruitment drive, on April 27, from noon – 5 p.m., at its fire hall at 405 West Main St., Springville.
“Come on out and join us, for this unique recruitment day at our firehouse,” said Assistant Chief Dave Klenk. “This is a great opportunity for our neighbors to get to know their local firefighters and EMTs. Our members love what they do; they are everyday folk who help neighbors when in need. You might call them ‘volunteer heroes.’
“We are hoping recruitment day will inspire some of our area residents to join the fire service family. Last year, our members served the community by responding to fires, medical emergencies and assisted with community events. If you ever wanted to serve your community, we can offer you a great opportunity. We provide you with the training and camaraderie. You’ll gain friendships, pride of service and respect,” the assistant chief said.
RecruitNY was instituted to enable fire companies to highlight the duties of a volunteer firefighter and raise public awareness about the need for volunteers.
Throughout the day, the West Valley Volunteer Hose Company Inc. and Springville Volunteer Fire Department will conduct tours of the station and firefighter apparatus, allow visitors to try on firefighter gear and provide activities for visitors. Members of the fire department will discuss the requirements to become a volunteer, as well as conduct demonstrations, answer questions and tell visitors about how to get involved in the department.
Last year, more than 430 fire departments in 55 New York counties held recruitment open houses.
Established in 2011, RecruitNY is a joint undertaking by the Firemen’s Association of the State of New York, the New York State Association of Fire Chiefs, Association of Fire Districts of New York State, Volunteer Fire Police Association of the State of New York and County Fire Coordinators Association of the State of New York.
