SPRINGVILLE — The Springville-Griffith Institute varsity boys basketball team lost its first game of the season on Dec. 14, against Cheektowaga Central School, by a score of 64 – 45.

The Griffs trailed Cheektowaga 20 – 2, after the first quarter. Coach Frank Noeson said that the slow start made it hard for his team to get back into the game. “The game obviously didn’t go according to our plan,” he said.

“We’ve talked, all preseason, about the idea that games cannot be won, in the first half, but they certainly can be lost. Take away the first quarter and it was a one point game.”

S-GI trailed 32 – 11, at halftime, but came out in the second half, attempting to make a comeback. The Griffs outscored Cheektowaga 34 – 32, in the second half, and played better defense then they did in the first half. Noeson said he liked his team’s effort, but said they committed too many errors that cost them.

“We had 36 turnovers. It’s tough to beat anyone, when you give them double and triple the opportunities that you have, offensively. We were also out-rebounded 45 – 23.

“We gave up over 20 offensive rebounds, that led to easy put backs. We have to be more focused on boxing out and make sure that we’re finding bodies to block out.”

Bill Dickinson led the Griffs in scoring, with 13 points. He also recorded three steals and three assists.

Noeson said he liked how Dickinson came out in the second half. “Dickinson had a slow start to the game, just like everyone else,” he said. “He came out in the second half, with a little bit of a chip on his shoulder. He took the ball strong to the basket, a couple of times, and made some three point plays, for us. His spark, early in the third quarter, helped others to try to make some things happen.”

Greg Beatty scored 7 points and grabbed four rebounds, while Adam Wolfley scored 6 points.

Springville played at Lake Shore on Dec. 18 and was defeated 41 – 29. S-GI once again trailed 25 – 7, at halftime. The Griffins won the third quarter 10 – 4 and outscored Lake Shore 22 – 16, in the second half.

Dickinson led the Griffs in scoring, with 13 points. Kevin Zabawa scored 4 points and Brian Seneca scored 3. The loss dropped the Griffs to 0 – 2 on the season.

The Springville team will take the court again on Thursday, Dec. 20, when they will host Depew Central School at 6:30 p.m.
