Springville-GI girls varsity basketball back-to-back victories

SPRINGVILLE — The Springville-Griffith Institute varsity girls basketball team won its second consecutive game on Dec. 21, against Depew Central School, by a score of 45 – 41.

S-GI trailed, after the first quarter, by a score of 11 – 8. Junior athlete Erin Kwiatkowski said the slow start was a result of many factors.

“We struggled early in the game, on both offense and defense,” she said. “We just couldn’t put everything together, for whatever reason.”

The Lady Griffs were trailing Depew by a score of 21 – 16, at halftime. Kwiatkowski said that the team came out in the second half, with an improved attitude. “We came out in the third quarter, determined to play better,” she said. “Our goal was to play together, as a team, and to close the gap on the scoreboard.”

S-GI was down 6 points, heading into the fourth quarter, but used the final games’ moments, to defeat Depew.

The Lady Griffs outscored Depew 20 – 10, in the fourth quarter and took the lead back, en route to the 45 – 41 victory.

Kwiatkowski said that the fourth quarter was where the game was won.

“It was a great quarter and, when we finally went ahead, it was a great feeling, because we were down all game,” she said. “We knew it was going to be a tough game, because we beat them three times last year, so we knew they’d be coming hard for this game.”

Kwiatkowski led the team in scoring, with 13 points. Also scoring for S-GI were Heaven Rollek, with 9 points; Tia Woodarek, with 6; Alena Woodarek, with 5 and Tainne Dallas, with 4. Katelyn Darling and Katrina Kerkendall each scored 3 points, while Sarah Byrne chipped in, with 2 points.

With the Depew win, the Lady Griffs improved to 2 – 2 on the season. Next up for S-GI was the annual Emerling Ford Holiday Tournament on Dec. 27 – 29.
