S-GI varsity girls soccer team keeps on winning

SPRINGVILLE — The Springville-Griffith Institute varsity girls soccer team improved to 9 – 3 with a pair of victories, last week. On Oct. 1, the Lady Griffs beat Lake Shore with a 3 – 1 win.

The Woodarek sisters, Alena and Tia, led the way offensively, for S-GI. Tia had 2 goals and an assist, while her sister Alena tallied a goal and an assist.

Coach Eric Holler said that he liked the way his girls came out, determined to set the tone for the game. “We dominated play for the majority of the game and buried our scoring opportunities when we had them,” he said. “Our defense played well with the exception of one lapse that led to [Lake Shore’s] lone goal.”

On Oct. 4, the Lady Griffs traveled to take on Maryvale and earned a 4 – 0 shutout victory. Holler said that his team played a complete game. “We were in control nearly the entire game and we didn’t give up many scoring chances at all,” he said. “The Woodarek sisters scored when we needed to solidify the victory. It was nice to see Leah Waldman notch her first goal of the season.”

Alena Woodarek had 2 goals and an assist. Tia Woodarek recorded a goal and an assist. Waldman scored a goal and Dakota Nesselbush had an assist. Katie Zeilen-Ersing posted a shutout in net for S-GI.

With four games’ remaining in their regular season, Holler said he is proud of his team. “The girls are right where they should be and we’ve been competitive in every game, so far,” he said. “In order to be successful in the post season, we need to get healthy and play better against the tougher teams we play. As long as we do those things and put together a total team effort, there is no reason we shouldn’t have a successful end to the season.”

The Lady Griffs hosted Cheektowaga Central School on Wednesday, Oct. 10.
