Journal columnist wins national writing award

SPRINGVILLE — Dave Barus, Springville Journal outdoor columnist, won first place in the family participation/youth outdoor education category of the 2013 Excellence in Craft contests, presented by The Outdoor Writers Association of America.

First, second and third place winners were chosen, in nine areas, from work created in 2012. Cash prizes totaled more than $10,000.

Prize money, plaques and certificates will be presented to winners at the OWAA’s 86th annual conference, scheduled for Sept. 14 – 16, in Lake Placid, N.Y.

Barus’ article, “Stamina Kids Enjoy Bison City ‘Teach-Me-To-Fish,’” appeared on the Erie County Federation of Sportsmen communication website on April 29, 2012.

According to Barus, this award helps to promote New York State Department of Conservation outdoor programming, the Erie County Federation educational youth outreach programs and each of the individual member clubs that offer educational outreach fishing programs.
