SPRINGVILLE — Matt Sobota struck out nine batters in four innings, on May 19, to propel the Springville 14U team to an 8 – 6 win against Eden.
Sobota threw 14 first-pitch strikes, out of the 21 batters he faced. After Eden took a 2 – 0 lead, Dan Wirfel hit a single up the middle, to score Zack Slippy, in the bottom of the second inning, to make the score 2 – 1.
Marcus MacWilliams scored Wirfel on a single to left field, knotting the game at 2 – 2.
The game saw multiple lead changes, with both teams’ countering each other. Ian Baker smacked a double to center field, driving in Ty Sibiga and Sean Wright. Springville looked back, to take the 8 – 6 win.
At the plate, Wright went 2 – 3, in the win, and scored 2 runs. Slippy hit a triple to deep right center, which nearly left the ballpark. Bryce Szudzik went 1 – 2, with a run scored.
MacWilliams, Danny Roberson and Slippy combined, to pitch the last three innings, after Sobota’s exit. The three allowed 1 run on one hit, to close out the victory. The four pitchers combined, for 12 strikeouts, and threw 65 percent strikes. Springville will host River Rock on June 2.
