SPRINGVILLE — The Springville-Griffith Institute junior varsity girls basketball team kept its undefeated season alive on Dec. 21, as the Lady Griffs defeated Depew Central School by a score of 31 – 16.
With that victory, the JV girls improved their record to 4 – 0 on the season.
S-GI jumped out to a 19 – 4 lead and used the early start. Coach Robert Gainey said that he was impressed by the way his team came out. “We had an incredible start to the game,” he said. “The girls really came out, with some energy.”
The Lady Griffs utilized their defense to hold off Depew, in the second half.
Gainey said that he believed the defensive effort put forth by his team was the key to the victory. “Our team defense was exceptional, tonight,” he said. “Brittany Luther was strong, defensively, even though she played through foul trouble, most of the night.”
Julia Krzemien led the way for S-GI, with 10 points.
The season’s start has the Lady Griffs picking up where they ended, last year. The girls now have a 10-game winning streak, dating back to last season.
Sophomore Jessica Wiede said that she thinks that her team’s early start has a lot to do with S-GI’s point guard play.
“Our point guards, Julia Krzemien and Brittany Luther, have really jump-started our success,” she said.
“We ask them to get the ball moving and to start our offensive sets. They are also two of our top scorers. Julia has great ball-handling skills and her attitude is always positive. They’ve been great, but, overall, it’s just been a complete team effort to this point.”
The JV Lady Griffs looked to remain unbeaten, when Springville hosted the annual Emerling Ford Holiday Tournament Dec. 27 – 29.
