SPRINGVILLE — The Springville-Griffith Institute varsity softball team took on Pioneer Central School on May 6 and came away with a 6 – 5 victory.
The Lady Griffs were looking to defeat rival Pioneer, for the second time, this season. On April 30, S-GI defeated the Panthers 2 – 1, behind a strong pitching performance from Katrina Kerkendall.
Kerkendall tossed a complete game, while striking out eight batters, in the victory.
“It all starts with Katrina; she was excellent, on the mound,” Coach Thomas Szczerbacki said.
“She’s had her two best pitching performances against Pioneer, throwing complete games, in both outings, and striking out 13 batters in total. I was very proud of the effort she put fourth.”
Sara Kwiatkowski led the way offensively, with a home run for S-GI. The Lady Griffs had many players’ contributing to the offensive effort.
Tainne Dallas and Heaven Rollek each had big hits, that helped S-GI earn the victory.
“The girls hit the ball hard and we came up with some big hits, when we needed them,” Szczerbacki said. “Everyone helped contribute to the win. I was pleased with the team’s performance.”
S-GI’s record, on the season, is now 4 – 9. The Lady Griffs will next take on East Aurora, on May 9.
