Springville-GI’s Mitchell Bunic takes first place at ECICs

Twelve swimmers and divers participated in the ECIC Division A Championships at Sweet Home High School on Feb. 3 and 4.

Springville-GI freshman Mitchell Bunic took first place in the 500 freestyle event. Competing against 30 other swimmers, many of who were juniors and seniors, Bunic swam the 20-lap race, taking more than 8 seconds off his own personal best time.

The S-GI team also scored fourth place finishes in the following events: 200-yard medley relay consisting of Don Piatek, Trey Aebly, Bunic and Dylan Boberg: Bunic in the 200 individual medley, Boberg in the 100 yard backstroke and the 400 freestyle relay team of Elliott Tessmer, Piatek, Bunic and Boberg.

Springville divers Christian Krasnek and Hunter Louth finished ninth and 11th, respectively. Other Springville swimmers who participated in ECICs were Trevor Cooper, Ryan O’Hara, Garrett Olrogg, Jacob Gorski and seventh grader Nolan West.

Of the 12 teams competing in the ECIC championships, the Springville swimmers placed fourth overall. Their final competition will be Sectionals at Maryvale High School on Feb. 17 and 18.
