SPRINGVILLE — The Springville-Griffith Institute boys junior varsity basketball team defeated Eden on Jan. 23, by a score of 63 – 24.
Coach Ed Bates said that he was pleased with the way his team started the game. “The boys came out right away and did what they had to do, in order to win the game,” he said. “I thought Devin Pazzuti set the tone early, by hitting a few open jump shots, right off the bat.”
S-GI opened up a 27 – 3 lead, at one point, during the game and went on to the 63 – 24 victory against Eden. Bates called this a “complete team victory, with many different players’ contributing. Everybody chipped in to help get the win,” he added. “Several different kids stepped up. While his name doesn’t show up on the stat sheet, Parker Rice did a nice job at the high post, in our zone offense. He reversed the ball nicely, several times, and found open guys, on more than one occasion. I also thought Colin Dewitt had his best game of the season. He was aggressive on defense and confident on [the] offensive end. He looked to distribute the ball, but also took some shots.”
Pazzuti led the Griffins in scoring, with 12 points. Kyle Warner, Bryce Stedman and Dewitt each scored 10 points. Rice had a team-high seven assists.
Springville has now won two consecutive games for the first time, this season. Posting back-to-back victories has improved S-GI’s record to 3 – 9.
Bates said that he is happy that his team is beginning to see its hard work pay off. “Winning these last two games has really jump-started the boys,” he said. “It’s nice to see that they are being rewarded for all their hard work, with these victories. We have a tough slate of games coming up, this week, and I’m hoping that we can build off of these wins.”
S-GI also took on Depew on Jan. 29.
