MACHIAS — For the past five years, the Lime Lake Cottage Owners Association has sponsored an annual Walk for a Cause. Each year, a different charitable organization is selected as beneficiary of proceeds from the walk.
This year, the Machias walk benefited the Hospice Foundation. Forty-five people participated and raised $7,117 – their highest total to date.
Wendy Thompson, event coordinator and board director of the LLCOA, was informed by the Hospice Foundation of Buffalo that Lime Lake raised the largest donation of any other fundraising event that other organizations and individuals had organized, this year.
Not only did each participant donate to join the 3.5-mile walk around the lake, but there was a raffle available, at the end of the walk. Thompson said there were many generous donations, gift certificates and gift baskets, for the raffle. Proceeds from this event will benefit the many patient and family services offered by The Center for Hospice and Palliative Care. The Center for Hospice and Palliative Care’s mission is to provide seriously ill individuals, and those who share their lives, with exceptional care, including hospice, palliative care, grief support, education and advocacy.
“This is never accomplished by just one person,” said Thompson. “I am grateful to the several people from around the lake that volunteered to help get donations, set up the day of the event and sell tickets.”
Next year’s Walk for a Cause donation will go to the Make a Wish Foundation.
