SPRINGVILLE — The Springville-Griffith Institute varsity softball team took on Mount Mercy on April 26, and came away with a 20 – 2 victory.
The Lady Griffs took control, early in the game, with a balanced, offensive attack.
The S-GI ladies played in the Silver Creek tournament on April 27, and split a pair of games. First, S-GI took on Salamanca, defeating the Warriors, by a score of 13 – 4. The Lady Griffs advanced, to play host Silver Creek, and were defeated, by a score of 12 – 9.
Despite not winning the tournament, the girls showed many positive signs along the way, according to team members.
“We came together as a team; everyone was chipping in,” Phoenix Rollek said. “We hit well, in both games and we ran our butts off. Our defense was on point and, if we made a mistake, we kept our heads up.
“We were determined to win; we wanted it real badly,” she continued. “As long as we just have fun and play the way we know we can play, then we’ll be successful, going forward.”
The Lady Griffins also took on Pioneer, on April 30, defeating the Panthers 2 – 1. Katrina Kerkendall pitched a complete game, for the Lady Griffs. Kerkendall struck out five batters, in the victory.
The S-GI varsity softball team’s record now sits at 3 – 7, on the season. The Lady Griffs took on Amherst High School on May 1.
