Pucks for Bucks returns to Springville, after one-year hiatus

SPRINGVILLE — A 2010 Springville-Griffith Institute graduate, Zack Hawayek, founded Pucks for Bucks, with business teacher Eric Holler, three years ago, to raise money for Buffalo Sabres right-winger Patrick Kaleta’s Helping Individuals to Smile Foundation.

After the event took a year off, last year, Holler brought it back to Springville, for the third Pucks for Bucks Floor Hockey Tournament, which was held on May 11.

Eight hockey teams took to the S-GI high school gym, for a single elimination tournament. Each team was guaranteed two games, one of which could be played in the losers’ bracket. Seven student teams and one adult and staff team competed, during the tournament. The 2013 Pucks for Bucks champion was a team made up of Captain Nate Wolcott, Kyle Crotty, Jason Fisher, Justin Dewitt and Matt Skeels.

The championship game saw Wolcott’s team matched up with the staff team and event organizer Holler. The staff team took a 2 – 0 lead, going into halftime, but Wolcott’s team scored 4 unanswered goals, to take the tournament title. Proceeds from this year’s tournament will go to Springville Youth Inc. and the S-GI Varsity Club.

The participating students credited Holler, Dr. James Velasquez and S-GI High School Principal Vince Vanderlip, for making the tournament possible.

Holler said that the event is already being planned for next year.
