S-GI girls JV volleyball wins game

SPRINGVILLE — The wins keep coming for the Springville-Griffith Institute girls junior varsity volleyball team, coached by Bob Gainey. The last seven of those wins have been 3 – 0 sweeps; with another one on Sept. 26, which began a home-and-home with Pioneer.

“Even though the girls started the first game off slowly, the Panthers had a difficult time handling the Lady Griffs’ serves,” Gainey said. Springville won by a 25 – 14 count. In the second game, Caelynn Jaehn scored 9 points from the service line, helping her team win 25 – 12. The sweep was completed in a 25 – 10 victory in game three.

Pioneer could not knock the Griffins off their stride the next night in the first game and Springville won the match 25 – 12. “That game was dominated by the great versatility of Jenna Schunke, as she continued her outstanding play,” Gainey said.

The girls were tied late in game two, knotted at 17. Gainey called a timeout, and the girls allowed 1 point the rest of the way, to win game two 25 – 18. “That game saw excellent effort from Leah Ratterman and Jess Weide,” Gainey said.

During game three, Springville completed its seventh sweep, with a 25 – 17 victory. “Setters Autumn Mangano and Sara Kwiatkowski played well to help the team to the win,” the coach said.

The team improved to 11 – 1, its only loss to the Amherst Tigers, on Sept. 11. The girls had another chance on Oct. 3. This time, Springville was at home, with a 4 – 0 home record. Springville played again on Friday, Oct. 5 at home against Maryvale and will play its next game on Tuesday, Oct. 9. That game is a road game against Cheektowaga, scheduled for 5 p.m.

The team’s next home game will be held on Thursday, Oct. 11 at 4:30 p.m. against Depew. Gainey encouraged the support of the Springville fans, as the girls continue to pile up the wins: “Make it a point to cheer this outstanding team on.”
