SPRINGVILLE — Springville-Griffith Institute’s varsity wrestling team looked to put a losing stretch behind it, on Jan. 9, when the team traveled to East Aurora, for the Griffins’ first non-tournament match, since Springville took on Maryvale on Dec. 19.
The team had started out 0 – 5 in league play and the losing continued, as East Aurora topped Springville. The final score was 49 – 12.
S-GI’s winners were led by freshman Bryce “Scuba” Szudzik, who pinned his 113-pound opponent in 3:50.
Eighth grader Ian Baker had a pin at 138 pounds, in 30 seconds. Another eighth grader made his mark, when Connor O’Brien won, during his first varsity match. His decision was by a pin, in 2:30.
Szudzik and Baker figured into the action, again, when the team left for Lockport for a tournament on Jan. 11 and 12.
Szudzik won the 113-pound championship, after going 3 – 0, during the Lockport Junior Varsity Tournament.
Baker went 4 – 2, pinning all four of his opponents, giving him fourth place, at 132 pounds. Bryant Boundy also had four pins, for a 4 – 2 record. He had a fourth place finish, as well, at 145 pounds.
The Griffins were in Holland on Wednesday, Jan. 16, to close out their season.
After that match, Springville participated in the Erie County Interscholastic Conference Tournament at Clarence High School on Friday, Jan. 18 and Saturday, Jan. 19.
The final event on Springville’s schedule will come on Saturday, Jan. 26, at a tournament at Kenmore West High School. That competition will begin at 9 a.m.
