West Valley Central School athletes shine, at senior game

WEST VALLEY — The Cattaraugus County exceptional senior game was held in Olean, on March 22.

West Valley Central School students Megan Bailey and Rachael Zimmer represented their school, during this annual game, which recognized Cattaraugus County’s highest-ranking, senior basketball players.

Bailey and Zimmer were both starters, for their team. They scored 15 and 4 points, respectively, in helping their squad to a 67 – 37 win. Bailey nailed three 3-pointers, during the all-star contest.

This year marked five senior West Valley Central School players’ careers.

Bailey led the Wildcats in scoring, this year, with a total of 194 points. She was ranked sixth in the entire league. She was also third in the league, in steals.

This student athlete was a first team, all-star selection.

Zimmer was second, in team scoring, and was second in the league, in steals. She was an honorable mention all-star selection.

WVCS athlete Megan Hebdon worked her way into a starting position and contributed both offensively and defensively, to her basketball team.

Victoria Calkins ranked third in team scoring and was named an honorable mention all-star.

Jessica Baker’s season was shortened, due to an injury. This athlete was named the Wildcats’ team sportsmanship winner.

She was also recognized as an all-Western New York scholar athlete. To qualify for this designation, a player must maintain a 90 or above grade point average, for six consecutive semesters, and be a starter or key reserve, on the team.

Trisha Thomas led the Wildcats in rebounding and pulled down 120 boards. She was an honorable mention all-star.

Courtney Walters was the team’s Will to Win Award winner. This recognition is given to a player who attempts to improve his or her game and lends a helping hand to his or her teammates.

Zimmer was the West Valley team’s Most Improved Player Award winner. She has played on the varsity basketball team for three years.

Bailey was named the team’s most valuable player.

The West Valley Central School Wildcats were presented with the Cattaraugus County league’s Team Sportsmanship Award.
