Springville-GI girls top Depew
Thursday February 16, 2012 | By:Matt Sargeant

A recent close loss to Depew may have still been fresh in the minds of the junior varsity girls from Springville-Griffith Institute when they hosted the Depew Wildcats two weeks later on Friday, Feb. 10. Back on Jan. 26, Springville came up short in Depew, falling by 1 point 49-48.
“This time,” said Head Coach Robert Gainey, “the girls were ready to defend and rebound at a high level.” That extra commitment played out to a 37-28 win for the Griffins.
The Jan. 26 loss to Depew was one of two back-to-back defeats. Since then, Springville has been undefeated, going 4-0 in that stretch with its most recent win over the Wildcats.
The girls held Depew to 2 points in the third quarter. Gainey credited Erin Kwiatkowski, Julia Krzemien and Phoenix Rollek with “outstanding perimeter defense,” which effectively shut down Depew’s attack.
“Sarah Byrne and Jess Wiede were outstanding in the paint, denying easy passes to the post players,” Gainey added.
The win boosted Springville’s record to 12-4 on the season, including an 8-2 record versus league opponents. The JV girls were back in action on Tuesday night in Maryvale against a team whom they defeated decisively 40-11 back on Jan.17.
On Friday, Feb. 17, the team will close out its season at home against Pioneer. Those teams met previously at Pioneer High School on Dec. 7, which was another one-sided win for Springville 52-21. Friday’s game is scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m.
