West Valley Central School girls JV basketball wins season opener

WEST VALLEY — West Valley Central School’s junior varsity girls basketball team began its season on Wednesday, Nov. 28 in North Collins and emerged victorious, with a 31 – 7 score. The team featured a group of three sophomores, three eighth graders and one freshman, that Coach Bryan Hansen described as “focused and ready for a strong season. I am really looking forward to a successful season with these girls,” he said. “Our focus will be on the defensive end of the floor. We will be the hardest-working team on the floor, each and every night.”

The defensive focus resulted in holding North Collins to no score, until 3 minutes remained on the clock, in the third quarter. On the floor, to open the season, were guards, sophomore Jordan Seltzer, freshman Alex Gentner and eighth grader Kelsey Chai. At forward were sophomore Cameron McLeod, sophomore Alycia Currie, eighth grader EmmaLea Erlandson and eighth grader Sidney Ploetz. Erlandson led the way, offensively, with 9 points. Seltzer and Gentner put up 6 points each, while McLeod had 4. Currie rounded out the scoring, with 2 points. On the defensive end, Erlandson had eight rebounds, to lead the team. McLeod had six rebounds and Currie notched four. Chai had eight steals.

“Our motto, this season, was to play great defense and be the hardest-working team on the floor,” said Hansen. “The girls accomplished that, tonight. This was a great start to the season.”

The girls were back on the court for another road game, against Salamanca, on Dec. 3. Despite coming back from a 5-point deficit to lead 24 – 23 after three quarters, the girls fell 34 – 26. They played the following night, in Franklinville.
