SPRINGVILLE — The Maple Grove kick-off classic featured 15 teams from section six, including Portville-Cattaraugus-Little Valley, Fredonia, Dunkirk, Southwestern, Medina, Niagara Falls, Maple Grove, Portville, Gow, St. Mary’s, Frewsberg and Falconer.
Sophmore Bryce Szudzik pinned one opponent and defeated another by a major decision, to reach the finals at 138 pounds. In the finals, Szudzik beat the first-place seed from PVCLV, Gabe Grey, by a score of 13-5, to take the championship.
Sophmore Jake Smith pinned two opponents, on his way to the finals. There, he met Scott Green of Falconer and lost a close match 2-1, to take second place at 132.
Another sophomore, Josh Ball, also pinned two opponents, one of which earned him the quick pin award, on his way to the finals. In the finals, Ball met Tyson Gugino and lost 6-3, to bring home the silver at 285.
Junior Jobe Fleming collected three pins, with a 3-1 record, in reaching the consolation finals, where he pinned Will Story from Gow in 42 seconds, to bring back the bronze.
Junior Bryant Boundy posted a 2-2 record, collecting two pins, on his way to take fourth place at 160. Zack Swank finished 1-2, with a pin at 120. Daryle Lynch finished 1-2, with a pin at 132.
Devin White-Kearns finished 1-1, with a decision, before he pulled out of the tournament with an injury. Jerry Weeks recorded a 1-2 record at 152 and Ian Baker went 1-2, also at 152.
The Griffins lost a dual match to Tonawanda, earlier in the week, 45-24.
Scoring for the Griffins was Jake Smith, with a pin at 132, and Bryant Boundy, with a pin at 170. Josh Ball, 285, and Zack Swank, 120, collected forfeits to round out the scoring.
The grapplers’ next home match was Dec. 13, after which they will travel to Alden for a tri-meet with Holland.
After that, the team’s next home match will be Jan 8, against East Aurora.
