Dylan Westfall named WVCS athlete of the week

WEST VALLEY — West Valley’s varsity boys soccer team has not won a matchup this season, unless its goaltender has played a perfect gam.e

In a total of nine games, WVCS senior Dylan Westfall laid the goose egg in four, accounting for all four of the team’s victories this far, in the season. His latest shutout effort came in a 30-save win against Franklinville at a road game on Sept. 29 – a win that required extra time.

West Valley prevailed, during a game that saw Ethan Boberg’s scoring off a Derek Wells’ pass in overtime, to take the game 1 – 0, completing a two-game sweep of Franklinville, this season. After the win, Coach Kristopher Fuller pointed out that this game was more than just a game stolen by the goalkeeper.

“This was a complete team effort led by Boberg, Wells, Jared Ras, Mike Grigsby, Patrick Enser and Emil Erlandson,” he said, after his team improved to 4 – 5.

“The defense rose to the occasion again, as now, all four of this season’s victories have come by way of shutouts. The shutout defense was once again led by Alex Fuller, Marcus Enser, Collin Proctor and Matt Proctor.”

Fuller recently selected Westfall as the school’s “athlete of the week.”

Westfall’s combined 58 saves during two games earned him the distinction. The keeper has four wins this season – all shutouts.

Two days before the victory over Franklinville, the Wildcats dropped a home game to Ellicottville by a score of 2 – 0. Westfall had 28 saves and held the Eagles scoreless, during the first half.

On Oct. 1, West Valley travelled to Hinsdale for the teams’ second meeting of the season. The first was a 2 – 0 shutout by Westfall on Sept. 7. WVCS played against North Collins on Oct 2. The West Valley team lost to this competitor 1 – 0 on Sept. 6.

Oct. 4 marked the team’s third game in four nights, when the boys sought to avenge a lopsided 8 – 1 loss to Frewsburg on Sept. 11. This time, West Valley was at home.

The next WVCS varsity boys soccer game is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. on Oct. 11. The boys will visit Walsh that night, whom Westfall also shut out 2 – 0 on Sept. 13.
