SPRINGVILLE — On Dec. 19, the Springville-Griffith Institute boys swim team defeated Tonawanda 79-23.
The team took first place in every event and second in six others. The 200-medley relay of Don Piate, Trey Abley, Mitch Bunic and Ryan O’Hara took first; Garret Olrogg, Jake Gorski, Brad Zifra and Nolan West placed second. Zifra placed first in the 200-free; O’Hara placed first and Olrogg took second in the 200-individual medley; Piatek took first and Abley placed second, in the 50-free; Hunter Louth placed first and Chris Krasnek took second, in diving. In the 100-fly, Elliott Tessmer placed first; Bunic placed first in the 100-free and West took first in the 500-free. The 200-free relay team of Abley, Piatek, Olrogg and Zifra placed first.
In the 100-back, Bunic took first and West took second. Tessmer placed first and Gorski second, in the 100-breast. The 400-free relay of Bunic, Tessmer, Piatek and West placed first; Olrogg, Greyson Louth, Gorski and Dominic Hartenstein placed second.
Erie County Interscholastic Conference times were earned by Zifra in the 200- and 100-free; O’Hara and Olrogg in the 200-IM; West in the 100-back and Tessmer and Gorski in the 100-breast. Class championship times were earned by Piatek in the 50-free, Tessmer in the 100-fly and West in the 500-free. Bunic earned sectional times in the 100-free and 100-back.
Next, The Griffs faced the East Aurora Bombers. The Griffs broke the 200-medley relay record for the third time this season, with a time of 1 minute, 48.95 seconds. Best times were earned along the way, but the team fell short in a 59-43 loss. First-place winners were Krasnek in diving, Bunic in the 500-free, and the 400-free relay of O’Hara, Piatek, West and Bunic.
Second-place finishers were the 200-medley relay team of Piatek, Abley, Bunic and West; Bunic in the 200-IM with a sectional time; Hunter Louth in diving; O’Hara in the 100-fly; Piatek in 100-free and 100-back, both class times, and Abley in the 100-breast. Best times were earned by Zifra in the 200-free, Bunic in the 200-IM, Tessmer in the 200-IM, O’Hara in the 50-free, Krasnek in diving, Piatek in 100-free and back, Bunic in 500-free, Kurt Ushold in 500-free and 50-free, Greyson Louth in 100-free, Matt Sobota in 100-back, Kyle Schultz in 100-breast. Louth dropped 13 seconds from his 100-free and Ushold dropped 8 seconds off his 500-free time.
The team’s next meets were against Cleveland Hill and Alden.
